How to Share Large Files over the Internet?

Video – VLog #06

When sending large data (or video) files to people you are conected to, there is alternative options to email.

Some email progams (or platforms) limit file-size, preventing you, the end user from sending via email.

Here David Logan – the IT Geek – is asked by our Willie Nicol – Techno Dinosaur – what options are available and simple to follow steps to sharing via the cloud.

Script – VLog #06

David Logan: Hi, I’m David Logan, the IT Geek based here in Annan, Scotland, UK.

David Logan: Joining me today is Willie Nicol our personal development life coach. Hello Willie, how are you and where are you today?

Willie Nicol: Hi David. I’m very well, thanks. I’m in Loans, a village outside Troon in Scotland, UK. I am a personal development life coach and as a result of the current situation, I’m having to do my coaching online, which is challenging for me because I’m a bit of a techno dinosaur – so it’s very helpful I have you to call on David.

David Logan: Fantasic .. great. Don’t you love the good weather?

Willie Nicol: Absolutely. Unfortunately – we’re stuck inside doing what we are doing, but one thing I would potentially do is make sure you take regular breaks.

David Logan: Fantastic .. great. So this week, Willie we are turning it around. Last week – I asked you a question, this week you’re going to ask me a question. Do you have a question for me?

Willie Nicol: I do indeed David. I’d like your help with file sharing apps or file sharing mechanisms. If I’m wanting to share a large file with you or one of my colleagues, explain to me how I do it and what you’d recommend is the best one.

David Logan: OK, so first of all. Our normal method of sending files is by email, but one assumes here your are talking about a big file, which is too big for email?

Willie Nicol: Absolutely, yes. I tried to send a file on it and it told me it was too big. So, there must be another mechanism or facility for doing so?

David Logan: So another way to do it, a slow way apart from pigeon is to go by memory stick, but I’m assuming you’re talking about the cloud here. Modern times, so we can get it immediately?

Willie Nicol: Yes, I can send it to you and you get it just after I send it to you.

David Logan: OK, good … good. So there’s many an option out there. We’ll look at a few of them here today for you. I’m not aware of you using them or not. So we have box dot com, we have Google drive, we have One drive – that’s one drive by Microsoft. You’ve got Google Drive by Google. There’s sugarsync that is s-u-g-a-r-s-y-n-c dot com. There’s others out there. There’s JungleDisk , another operation I use myself.

David Logan: What, these do is allow you to send a link from your program, your platform create a link and send it by e-mail to who you want to receive that file. So therefore, it reduces you filling up the mailbox of yours and the receivers end of that big file, and dependent upon the internet speed – e-mail it will be there instantly.

David Logan: How does that sound to you? Does that answer your question?

Willie Nicol: It does David. Thanks. It’s like instead of sending the file you’re creating a link to the file and sending the link up, which the other person can then open up. Is that correct?

David Logan: That’s correct. Yes. So generally, whatever platform you look at – let’s go for Dropbox, for example, Dropbox. So they all work in a very similar way, they have one directory on your laptop or on your desktop. so the directory is called Dropbox, you put all your stuff, all your files, photos you want to send a link to to that person put it into this folder and then you put your cursor over that file you want to share with myself, for example. You go right button click – create a link and it will copy it to the clipboard on your computer system. That then allows you to open up an e-mail and paste that link onto the e-mail.

Willie Nicol: mmm hmmm.

David Logan: Have I confised you?

Willie Nicol: No, not at all. No it’s making sense to me. It’s clearer than when we started, it was the challenge I was having was how to create that link and you just told me how to do it, and I want to be sending videos to other people and they are far too big to be sent just like simple e-mail. The process is now a lot cleaner. Thanks.

David Logan: Out of interest. How long are the videos are you looking at? Are you looking at five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes .. ?

Willie Nicol: Initially, it will be like, five minutes but I appreciate that the longer they are the bigger chunk of data, so to speak. Does that make a difference, when you are creating that link, whether it’s five minutes long, or twenty minutes long?

David Logan: No difference to the link at all. The main difference will be when you upload the video to the cloud, or there’s even download. It all depends upon internet speed. So obviously, the longer the video and the higher concentration of the video, not concentration, the higher the pixels.

Willie Nicol: Right.

David Logan: So I’m sorry starting to speak some geek language about this. To get more defined, the picture is clearer. It creates a bigger file, so it depends on the quality of the video. The final quality you have the longer the video is the bigger the file is.

Willie Nicol: Right. Got it.

David Logan: Is that us good for this week?

Willie Nicol: I think that’s great. Thank you very much. It’s a lot clearer in my head now. I was struggling with that, but much clearer and thank you very much.

David Logan: Great. OK, so to the viewer, we’re talking about the cloud – file sharing. If you have any other technical questions to ask myself, or maybe it’s addressing anxiety send us messages, YouTube comments, Facebook page comment, on our web site you can comment. Twitter – feel free message us, direct message us. Big thing though, on YouTube, please, the viewer – SUBSCRIBE. Down here please. Willie and I are looking for subscriptions. As Willie is laughing .. I don’t know why, but what are you laughing for Willie?

Willie Nicol: Well, subscription is always indicates to me you got to pay for something, but this is not the case we’re talking about here. We just want you to subscribe to our channel more subscribers we get the better. So you’re basically just supporting us.

David Logan: Fantastic. Right. That’s me. My name is David Logan, your IT Geek from Annan, Scotland, UK. Thank you – over to you Willie.

Willie Nicol: Thank you David. Yes, it’s me, Wille Nicol, the personal development coach also Techno Dinosaur, but learning all the time. It’s good-bye from me from sunny Loans near Troon in Scotland, UK.
