Script – VLog #08

David Logan: Hi, my name is David Logan, the IT Geek, explain the technology for the home worker. Taking the jargon out of the technology – I like helping people. With me today, co-host is Willie Nicol. Over to you Willie.

Willie Nicol: Thank you, David. Yes. It’s Willie Nicol – I’m a personal development life coach based in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland UK. The reason for me being here as I’m also a techno dinosaur, so I’m delighted that I’m able to ask David the hard techie questions.

David Logan: Great. For your information I come from Annan, South Scotland, UK. So we’re bothing doing well Willie . Is it sunshine with you today?

Willie Nicol: Yes, the sun is shining and I’m looking out of my front window, and I’m not actually in front of the San Francisco bridge or whatever it is called.

David Logan: Right. Want to keep this short this week for week 8!! Your question, please.

Willie Nicol: Yes, David. I’m in the process of recording some videos from my coaching business, and I wanted to know the best way of putting subtitles in the videos and also how to edit them properly.

David Logan: Okay, so first things first. You do videos. We want to look professional. So the first thing is you’ve got there already I see if that’s your virtual background. We’re all doing it. How do you do that that’s a question I’ll need to put to you some-day. Software, one assumes you’re talking about software.

David Logan: There’s different ways doing this. It’s like, how do you skin an apple or a pear?

David Logan: What we use is . You need to record your video. You can use the camera app on Windows 10. Or you can use software, other software providers out-with Microsoft Windows 10, something you can use is Camtasia. So that’s C for Charlie, A for Alpha, M for Mike, T for Tango, A for Alpha, S for Sierra, I for India and A for Alpha. Alternative software you can use is software called Wondershare Filmora. That is F for Foxtrot, I for India, L for Lima, M for Mike, O for Omega, R for Romeo and A for Alpha. Before we get there, though. Willie. Do you have an iPhone?

Willie Nicol: Yes, David. I do indeed.

David Logan: OK. I don’t know what the app is – I do believe if you record on your iPhone, there’s an app which can subtitles for you automatically?

Willie Nicol: Yes, I’m aware of that. It’s called the .. I forget the thing you are talking about – Clips, C.L.I.P.S. clips app. I’ve tried in the past where the app automatically superimposes what you’re seeing on your video as you’re saying it. However, I found that I had to use my best BBC voice because the app does not understand Scottish.

David Logan: Does it only do American? Sorry i shouldn’t say that. You’ve tried that, but it’s failed miserably.

David Logan: What I use for videos is a program on the Windows system called Amber Script. What we do here is we upload audio file, the speaking part uploaded into Amber Script, it then detects the file. I can only assume of the same probability, as your iPhone. There’s a lot of editing done. However, you can pay more to improve the prediction a bit better. What I find find of all these programs as needed, train them. Speak chapters into the system. It recognizes your voice. And then you can dictate it well. The program used is called Amber Script.

David Logan: A -M – B – E – R – S – C – R – I – P – T.

David Logan: That then creates, you can then export that into any format you want. Word file, Microsoft Word, or text. Then you can upload that into a video editing software. We can then combine that text with the video.

Willie Nicol: So what video editing software do I need?

David Logan: So that’ll be one of two I mentioned before. Camtasia, or Wondershare Filmora. There not very expensive, that depends how you value your time. Being Scottish – we don’t like giving away money. Does that answer your question?

Willie Nicol: Yes, that’s that’s very kind of you. So go to a subtitles Amber Script, film editing Camtasia or Filmora.

David Logan: Yes Filmora Wondershare.

Willie Nicol: Right, OK.

David Logan: So what can do for the feed for the viewer and yourself Willie . we can put on, when we upload this video. Is put in the comments – the web site references.

Willie Nicol: I think they’ll be very helpful. Just in case my memory doesn’t quite retain that information.

David Logan: Yeah. It’s slow it’s labourious, I believe you pay for what you get.

Willie Nicol: OK.

David Logan: You want it more accurate – you pay that higher price. You don’t want it to be accurate you pay the lower price, but then you spend time for doing it. Good thing for you Willie, can you check on your iPhone app if there is a paid version, and if you can do the same, if you can have it more, you can dictate to it, and then it may be more accurate?

Willie Nicol: That’s a good idea. I’ll do that then. They said it was free and I’ve been overly critical. It took me the last time I used it, it took me five or six goes and I did find myself lapsing into the best BBC Voice, which generated a bit of humor, shall we say.

David Logan: OK. Is that good?

Willie Nicol: That’s good. I think that has covered it. David, thank you very much.

David Logan: Great. Let’s end here. Week 8. Believe it or not? To the viewer if you’ve got any questions and say for the two video editing programs that we talk about here, been the comments down below us. For YouTube please please on behalf of Willie and myself, subscribe. We want people to subscribe. Once again Willie is laughing. Don’t know why? Over to you Willie.

Willie Nicol: No, I absolutely agree. It’s the way you describe it, but I would applaud you. Yes. Please subscribe to our YouTube channel. It’s a good thing.

David Logan: Great. So it’s David Logan the I.T. geek. Computer problems is what I seek. Goodbye. Goodbye, everybody.

Willie Nicol: Yes. And it’s goodbye from me, Willie Nicol, the life coach and Techno Dinosaur. Bye.
