Willie Nicol: Hello everyone and welcome to another fun filled episode of The Techno Dinosaur Meets the I.T. Geek, episode vlog number 79. I am Willie Nicol, the Techno Dinosaur so called because I am technologically challenged however, I am also a personal development life coach who helps people with the stuff they might be struggling with in their life. I am based in Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. With me today is my usual partner in crime David Logan the I.T. Geek, so David how are you and where are you today?

David Logan: Hi Willie, I am great I am good, alive and kicking. My name is David Logan the I.T. Geek based here in Annan, South-West of Scotland. It is a good day to be alive.

Willie Nicol: So, what do you want to tell the viewers then?

David Logan: I want to tell the viewers, I want to introduce to them, people will be hearing about Windows 11. What is Windows 11? First of all, I am going to ask you The Techno Dinosaur, Willie what is your thinking of Windows, what is it to you?

Willie Nicol: Well, I know that my operating system on my PC is Windows 10 so simplistically maybe Windows 11 is an advancement to Windows 10, whether we like it or not and we will have to comply with Microsoft’s dictates that we now buy into with Windows 11. Is it a good thing and what does it do for us and is it going to cost us a lot of money?

David Logan: Firstly, let’s look at the good things. It is going to be faster, flashier, and secure for you. Forget about the marketing side for now but basically Windows 11 is a new operating system. Since what is stored in your computer, your device it can be installed on phones, tablets, on your computer, laptops and the idea is that they are trying to get closer and closer to like what you’ve got in your android phones or your apple operating system. So, it is going to look and feel the same, it doesn’t matter if you are on a phone, tablet, or a computer. Which is not good news for guys in business like myself for the office computers but we’ll get over it, it is a challenge. So, it has come as a surprise for the likes of myself Windows 11 because if you remember rightly Willie, when they brought out Windows 10 and said right that’s it, last big major update. I’ll not be doing any more big updates, big biannual updates that’s it. Just keep updating Windows 10 quietly in the background and you’ll be good. So that is a quick introduction to Windows 11 but as you were saying there at the start, you were talking about maybe having to buy a new computer, did you say?

Willie Nicol: Well do we have, when we upgrade the operating system, do we have to upgrade the hardware, the devices, laptops, PC’s etcetera, etcetera or can the existing devices operate on the new system?

David Logan: OK one big thing, that I see that is a stumbling block for upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10 or Windows 7 is you have got to have a device, a chip in your system called a TPM. T for Tommy, P for Peter, M for Mike. That is a trusted platform module, it is a security device, if you don’t have that Windows 11 will not run. So, if you look at the majority of computers. We’ll concentrate on laptops and desktops for now but you look at the majority of those, will they have the module in? No. I think that answers your question on do we need to spend money?

Willie Nicol: So that leaves us with no choice if we want to use Windows 11, we have to upgrade or buy a new device, is that right?

David Logan: Potentially yes.

Wilie Nicol: OK

David Logan: But if you think about it though the jump from Windows 8 to Windows 10, it had taken a good 5 or 6 years before we were forced to stop using Windows 8. Windows 8 being the previous version of Windows. So, it was a good number of years before they did say look you can’t, Windows 8 is not going to be supported for business, you must go to Windows 10 now. They don’t say like for security you should make that jump on their advice but if you are just working from home, a hobby, Windows 8 is good. Windows 7 is good but be aware as we stand 6 years today on this video Windows 7, Windows 8 is not supported, and some variants of Windows 10 are not supported by Microsoft.

Willie Nicol: Ok, so perhaps 3 or 4 years down the line we will have to upgrade?

David Logan: Yes, but think about what has happened in the past 3, 4 years with technology, which has been all about technology. Think about what has come out it is quite a big advancement in a number of years is Windows 11 going to be the last build for Microsoft? Who knows, we all thought Windows 10 was going to be the last. Here’s Windows 11, watch this space in 5 years’ time.

Willie Nicol: Oh yes, we’ll be onto Windows 15. The cynic in me says this is another way of Microsoft making loads and loads of money and selling it to us by, this is better, this is quicker, its more secure, its faster, it’s this, it’s all singing all dancing right and it’s like planned obsolescence. If you don’t buy our new stuff the old stuff won’t work. Whether it is still particularly functional or not, so forgive my cynicism, however, I think that will probably do us for today, David, time wise. Thank you very much for explaining that. I’ll take my cynicism and park it somewhere. So, for the viewer I hope that has been useful, Windows 11 the new face of Microsoft coming to a computer near you soon. All that remains for me to say, I’m Willie Nicol the Techno Dinosaur is to stay safe, stay well and have some fun. Goodbye for now.

David Logan: Thank you for listening to the viewer, hope you have enough information about Windows 11. Last piece of advice is do not jump into it right now, let it settle, let them get the bugs out. For now, please share our videos, comment on them, post them we need engagement and have a great week everybody. My name is David Logan the I.T. Geek showing the Techno Dinosaurs how to use technology simply and easily. Thank you, have a great week.
